Acupuncture in Castlewellan, County Down
Acupuncture — specifically Western medical acupuncture, sometimes called dry needling — is one of the treatment tools Declan uses as part of physiotherapy care at Better Days. It is particularly useful for managing pain and reducing muscle tension alongside other hands-on and exercise-based treatments.
What is Western medical acupuncture?
Western medical acupuncture draws on the principles of traditional acupuncture but is applied within a conventional clinical framework. Fine needles are inserted at specific points — often in or around the painful area or in associated muscle groups — with the aim of reducing pain, releasing muscle tension, and supporting recovery.
It is not a standalone alternative therapy here. At Better Days, acupuncture is used where it is clinically appropriate, as part of a broader treatment plan designed around your specific assessment findings.
What conditions may it help with?
Acupuncture may be helpful for a range of musculoskeletal problems, including:
Persistent back and neck pain
Joint pain and stiffness
Headaches related to neck and muscle tension
Muscle knots and trigger points that are limiting movement
Chronic soft tissue pain
Your assessment will determine whether acupuncture is appropriate for your situation — it is not right for everyone, and Declan will be upfront about whether it is likely to help you.
What to expect
The needles used are very fine — much thinner than a typical injection needle. Most people find the sensation mild. You may feel a dull ache, a slight pressure, or a brief twitch response when a needle reaches a trigger point. Sessions typically last 20 to 30 minutes as part of your physiotherapy appointment.
Who delivers it
Declan Leonard is a Chartered Physiotherapist registered with the HCPC and CSP. He has integrated acupuncture into clinical practice as part of a wider physiotherapy skillset. This is not standalone acupuncture — it is physiotherapy-led, assessment-based treatment that uses acupuncture where the evidence supports it.
Pricing
Acupuncture is included as part of your physiotherapy session — no separate fee.
Assessment or review: £45 (45 minutes)
